R.W. Apple

I was planning on writting about this in my Wheel column, but since we didn't print last week due to Fall Break, I am going to write in on my blog instead.

R.W. Apple, long-time New York Times reporter extraordinaire, died on October 4. He was 71. Apple was my favorite New York Times reporter. In his 43 year career with the Times, he wrote hard news, news anaylsis, travel stories, and food stories. He was one of the rare reporters who could write news and softer feature stories like food and travel.

He was one of the leading newspaper journalists during the Vietnam War and then became one of the leading political journalists in the country covering 10 presidential elections and 20 party conventions.

Johnny (as he was known) Apple reported from more than 100 countries for the New York Times and was bureau chief at NYT bureaus around the world. He worked until the day he died, writting his last column from the hospital and making his own memorial service arrangments. He was truly a reporter who was deticated to the news and his readers. R.W. Apple will certainly be missed.
